This is Hojicha roasted tea (ほうじ茶).

This is a wonderfully mild, subtle Hojicha tea. Hojicha teas are typically characterized by their robust, smokey taste with grassy undertones. This tea has a smokey, slightly nutty, complex taste but subtly provides that taste. It is clearly a green tea but has no hint of grassiness or astringency.

The taste is sweet and comforting and lingers in the mouth. It is a refined tea that shines when brewed at a relatively lower temperature than a typical Hojicha.

We like this tea brewed for about 30 seconds at 80°C (176°F). As with all of our teas, we try them at different temperatures, different brewing times, and amounts of tea, and for this complex tea, we found the lower temperature works very well.

At higher temperatures, a more robust flavor appears. This tea is also delicious when brewed a second time when it can be brewed at a higher temperature.

This tea is not a typical Hojicha roasted tea. The roasting time for this variety is less than that typically found in a Hojicha, and only first-flush premium stem teas are used. The brewed tea has a light-brown liquor and a sweet, rich aroma.

This is our third Hojicha offering; the other two are Hojicha Classic from Shizouka and Organic Sannen Bancha from Nara.

This is not a decaffeinated tea but is lower in caffeine than most Japanese green teas. The tea plant leaves contain the most caffeine; as this tea is made from stems and is roasted, it is a low-caffeine tea.

Hojicha

A mild, gentle roasted green tea

Hojicha is a roasted Japanese green, notable for its low amounts of caffeine. The major difference between this tea and others is that, instead of being steamed, it has been roasted. This process creates a unique tasting profile. It gives it a nutty, toasty flavor and aroma. Unlike most other Japanese teas, the color of the liquor is brown due to it being toasted. Hojicha is one of the classic Japanese green teas.

Hojicha is usually made from bancha but sometimes sencha.

This roasting process reduces the caffeine and tannin content, creating a mild, lower-caffeine alternative for children, the elderly and those who are sensitive to caffeine. For Hojicha, it is recommended that you use close to boiling water (95°C) and a short brewing time. Ready in 15 seconds, this tea has a nutty flavor and a pleasant aroma. This tea is usually the first tea that Japanese babies drink. This is a good, tasty tea that must be tasted.

We are often asked what hojicha tea tastes like and the best way to describe it is that it has a mild, sweet taste with a delicate smokey flavor.
