This is Hojicha roasted tea (pronounced hou ji cha) that is robust yet has a touch of Sencha in taste. The first flush stems roasted to produce a rich flavor with sweetness, this is a very satisfying Hojicha tea.

This tea is not a typical Hojicha roasting tea. The roasting time for this variety is less than normally found in a Hojicha and only first flush premium stem teas are used. The appearance of the tea shows as light brown stem tea with distinct green tea flavor.

We offer three types of Hojicha and this is the most robust. The others are Hojicha Classic, and Organic Sannen Bancha

This is not a decaffeinated tea but is low in caffeine compared to most Japanese green teas.

As mentioned, the production of Hojicha involves roasting the tea leaves, stems, and twigs at high temperatures, distinguishing it from other green teas like Sencha and Matcha. This roasting process reduces the caffeine content and imparts a reddish-brown color to the tea leaves. The result is a mild, toasty flavor with hints of caramel and a smooth finish, making Hojicha a delightful beverage for any time of day.

Hojicha

A mild, gentle roasted green tea

Hojicha is a roasted Japanese green, notable for its low amounts of caffeine. The major difference between this tea and others is that, instead of being steamed, it has been roasted. This process creates a unique tasting profile. It gives it a nutty, toasty flavor and aroma. Unlike most other Japanese teas, the color of the liquor is brown due to it being toasted. Hojicha is one of the classic Japanese green teas.

Hojicha is usually made from bancha but sometimes sencha.

This roasting process reduces the caffeine and tannin content, creating a mild, lower-caffeine alternative for children, the elderly and those who are sensitive to caffeine. For Hojicha, it is recommended that you use close to boiling water (95°C) and a short brewing time. Ready in 15 seconds, this tea has a nutty flavor and a pleasant aroma. This tea is usually the first tea that Japanese babies drink. This is a good, tasty tea that must be tasted.

We are often asked what hojicha tea tastes like and the best way to describe it is that it has a mild, sweet taste with a delicate smokey flavor.

Favorite morning tea

This is my favorite tea for morning through late afternoon. I brew a pot, combining 1/2 Yame Gyokuro Green Tea for an added dimension. Each basket of tea results in 2 brews, 30 seconds per. The aroma, flavor and after notes are perfect for my palate. My only issue is that I would like to purchase 3 bags every time I order and this product is not always available. Thank you Chado Tea House for introducing me to my fav!
